Why are leaving the things you love so damn hard? In this episode of Sailing Nandji, it is nearly Christmas time and for the first time since leaving Australia in July 2017 we have the opportunity to go home and see friends and family. Yosh has not been back to Oz in over 2.5 years and Bonita only returned briefly over a 1.5 years ago. We had been working towards being able to do this since changing our sailing plans mid 2019 and finally the final days were upon us. Heading to Oz, means Marley can not come with us due to strict quarantine laws in Australia, instead we drop him off to a carer who will look after him whilst we are away. And then there were two as we say our goodbyes to Marley. Leaving our shadow in Phuket, we sail across Phang Na bay to the Krabi province where we plan to leave Nandji.

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we return to Thailand from Malaysia and get straight into the list of boat jobs needed to complete before we can continue on our journey. Thailand is a great place to complete tasks as there are many options to find boat supplies. Whilst we were cruising in Indonesia, Yosh made a boo boo and accidentally put a hole in the tender. After patching it up himself, the continual leak has been driving us crazy so we take it to the professionals to fix. Whilst there, we get some added protection for our RIB. Its tender love day, because dinghies need loving too!
Flying down wind, we need to avoid a fishing trawler and we LOSE steering... In this episode of Sailing Nandji, our quick dash to Langkawi is complete and we have some stronger winds forecast to blow us back to Thailand. We head out early and enjoy some great fun sailing. There are lots of fishing trawlers to watch out for and trying to do some quick avoidance, we lose our steering at sea... She will be right! Who needs steering anyway, Right???
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, our visas are up in Thailand and we need to do the typical sailing visa run in the area to Langkawi. We never thought we would be heading back to this land after spending 3 months in the boatyard here and honestly when we left, the last thing we could ever think of was coming back to Langkawi. But as our story evolves and plans change, we need to return to the island once again.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after a couple of days at sea, we arrive back to the island of Phuket in Thailand. After spending 5 months in remote Indonesia we were craving the simple things in life that a developed tourist area offers. Western food and supermarkets, wine and lots of people! Bonita makes the most of being able to get dressed up and look pretty and then is left alone with the scissors... It is good to be back in Thailand where everything just feels easier and more free. We have a tradition now that when ever we complete a passage we hunt for the nearest beer and burger for breakfast! We happen to drop anchor next to Uncle's boat and it is great to see this legend again and celebrate his birthday! With full bellies and big smiles, we relax into Thailand life again and prepare for the onward journey.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we depart the Turtle islands and head north up the west coast of Sumatra on our way back to Thailand. Our destination is the island of Sabang, the north western most point of Indonesia where we plan to clear out of the country. The trip up the coast had some bad wet weather to start but this only lead into some of the funniest smoothest and fastest sailing we have had for a while! Champagne sailing ladies & gentlemen. Nandji was gliding along at great speeds, fast enough to have the fishing line scream and we catch the BIGGEST Wahoo we have ever caught! It was that big the local fishing boats came from everywhere!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we depart the island of Simeulue and head 30nm out to sea to the remote tiny island group we refer to as Turtle island! On our sail down the coast from Thailand 5 months ago, we briefly stopped off at these islands and swam with the most amount of turtles we had ever seen. We never expected to be back here, but since we had the opportunity too, we had to return to see all the turtles again! The water is crystal clear and with a freezer needing to be replenished, Yosh does some spearing landing a couple of Coronation Trout. To go with the large Spanish Mackerel we caught the day before, we are back in business. Living from the Sea.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are still at the island of Simeulue off the west coast of Sumatra. this sleepy laid back island is as close to a free range farm as you can get! With limited protected anchorages along this coast line, we explore the island by land. We hire a scooter and dodge all the farm animals and their land mines, as we take the hog down some jungle tracks looking for waves. It is pretty easy to make a stranger smile. We have an old surfboard we wish to give away and we head down the beach in search of some grommets to pass it on to. It was actually harder to do then it sounds! But we perceiver and one lucky lad is the proud new owner of a surfboard!!
