Heading north up the Sumatran coast towards the most GNARLIEST patch of water for this whole journey! In this episode, we have been steadily making tracks north towards Thailand over the last week. With the final stretch in Indonesian waters, we are preparing to round the northern tip of Sumatra. The entire Indian Ocean tries its best to pass through 3 tiny cuts through the land mass. With currents flowing up to 6 knots, we are in for a wild ride if we don't time this right! This could go horribly wrong!

Sailing to Thailand!!! Let the 500 miles begin! In this episode we are a family at sea on our way to Thailand! For the last few days we had been trying to make ground north through the West Sumatran islands towards the most north western tip of Indonesia to our clearance port Sabang. The weather has been terrible and with only a small window of nice weather before more expected bad weather comes, we have been persevering through some heavy seas, needing to turn around and hide away from weather, been boat bound in the mangroves with torrential rain and then finally sailed north from the island of Nias to Treasure island in the Banyak island group. With still a further 500 nautical miles to sail to reach our final destination of Thailand, the journey is just beginning!
With the weather still not settled, we continue to try and make ground... In this episode, we continue on our journey north towards Thailand. After getting smoked by a massive squall the day before, we pick up anchor and head back out to sea. Once again the sky is dark and the wind is up. Being a little more tentative this time, we lean on the side of caution and try our best to dodge the bad weather....
Trying to make ground out of Indonesia we leave a little early and sail directly into a Storm! In this episode, after missing our great sailing window because of needing to change props... We try to be sneaky and sail 25 nautical miles up the coast before the expected bad weather comes. We didn't make it... We get smashed by a massive squall in 35+ knots and a building confused sea, off the headland we lose our steering. Then the windvane breaks... We have no steering and hove to in massive waves...
Preparing to sail 700 nautical miles to Thailand, Yosh went to check the prop.... IT"S BROKEN!!! In this episode, our folding Autoprop is broken, again! Anchored in a protected bay, Yosh was going over the boat and preparing for the journey ahead when he discovered the Autoprop had a loose blade. This is the same problem that happened causing us to be adrift at sea for 10 days. Lucky we had learnt our lesson from when this problem first happened and we carry a spare fixed blade prop. In remote Indonesia, in some far out murky water bay, Yosh removes the rudder and changes our Sailboat propeller...
This is the dark side and difficult side of sailing around the world. In this episode, we have some difficult times on Nandji. First Bonita's Dad has a heart attack back in Australia. We decide she needs to fly home solo and be there for her dad to help him on the road to recovery. Meanwhile, Yosh and Tallula remain on Nandji in remote Indonesia. Bonita returns from Australia after 2 weeks and we stay in our friend house for a night, off the boat. Returning to Nandji the next day, I realise people have been onboard and have stolen our stuff!
On a 300 nautical mile sail north, trawling for a simple fish for dinner turns into MAN vs MONSTER!!! In this episode, we depart the city of Padang in West Sumatra, Indonesia on a 300 nautical mile journey to the island of Nias. Trawling through the Telos islands trying to catch dinner, we end up hooking more than we bargained for! What do you do with a fish this big! Smooth sailing and a terrific passage to our destination, Bonita is busy in the kitchen when the gas runs out. With a public holiday in the islands, trying to get gas turns out to be impossible! With no way of cooking dinner, we need to get creative and go cook up a feast on the fire!
Just pop down to the shops to pick up a few things.... This means a full day scooter riding and a 100 nautical mile sail!!! In this episode, we are out in the Mentawai Islands in need of supplies before some bad weather arrives. Yosh heads into the town to get some fuel, food and other essentials for the potential week of bad weather and being boat bound. Bonita has been braving her way through a relentless toothache for a while now and since the only dentist around is 100 nautical miles away, we set sail for the main city of Sumatra, Indonesia. Padang. With more bad weather inbound, its a rush to get everything done and get out of the city. As Bonita returns form the dentist, she is ready for anything!!
