Limping up the Malacca Strait, the Final 400nm. Ep 116

2/24/2019

Leaving the safety of the marina, we head out into the busy shipping area of the Malacca Strait. We have sailed and limped Nandji over 1600nm to get this far and now have a measly 400nm left to arrive to Langkawi and the ship yard where we can haul out and fix our beloved Nandji. This journey has taken over 2 months to travel this far in the challenging conditions of the seasons changing. We have dealt with many hurdles and overcome lots of difficult circumstances to safely get Nandji this far and still smiling.

The Malacca Strait is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and has on average a ship entering or exiting its water every 6 minutes. We sail up the tight inshore designated traffic area squeezed between land and the shipping channel. With strong winds, heavy squalls, fishing nets and tons of little fishing boats to avoid and crossing the shipping lane into Kuala Lumper, this final 400nm was eventful you could say!

We hope you enjoy the episode legends, be sure to tell your friends and spread the Nandji word! Thanks!

Yew!

Sailing the BUSIEST Shipping Channel in the WORLD! Ep 115

2/17/2019

After a sailing through the night on our 8th day of passage on Christmas eve, we make a spontaneous decision to stop off on Christmas day to speak to family. With the polluted water of the city in Tanjung Pinang, a squall blows through in the wee hours of the morning and we drag anchor because of the plastic on the bottom. Finally in the safety of Nongsa Point Marina, we rest up and let the unusual weather blow through up north. We celebrate New Years eve and enjoy the week spent in the luxurious resort/marina. Having a swimming pool to play in, air conditioning, cold drinks and a washing machine! Oh the luxuries!!
The weather clears and it is time to sail in the busiest shipping lane in the world! We had been nervous about this passage ever since deciding to sail this far to the boat yard. The Singapore strait was an eye opener as the sheer size and speed of the vessels passing so close to you kept us on the edge of our seats! With a good breeze and feeling as comfortable as we were going to get, we turn Nandji into the Shipping lanes and cross the busiest shipping lane in the world! Dodging ships and manoeuvring around vessels over 250m long!
What a ride and what a last passage to our new engine! We hope you enjoy this episode legends! Yew!

Our Boat is trying to KILL US! Ep 114

2/9/2019

For the past year we have been limping Nandji with a broken Engine, trying to get somewhere we can replace it. In this episode we depart Belitung, Indonesia and attempt to sail to Nongsa Point Marina where we can check out of Indonesia and head to Malaysia. As we are sailing closer to the equator we deal with heavy 40 knot squalls, strong opposing currents and little wind. A freak accident occurs which causes a fire and then we start taking on water which leaves us convinced that our boat is trying to kill us.

We hope you enjoy this difficult episode for us! It was one of our most challenging sails to date and all over the holiday time when we are meant to be having fun! (We still enjoyed it secretly)

So I'm not overly cleaver when it comes to linking words together. I make up words and use slang more to confuse people in thinking that I know a great deal about nothing. See I just confused myself... But this blog is about our journey in living outside of the square that society expects us to follow. We like to run our own race, that way we always win.
