​Time away from the family has a way of putting everything into perspective, and it really reminded me of what really matters. Any questions or thoughts about why I have put in the long hours and the hard work on Nandji 2, are answered so easily when I look around and see the ladies. It makes every recent challenge feel worthwhile. Whilst we have been through a tough patch of recent and there were moments that tested us in ways we didn’t expect. It was those difficult times that have strengthened us, drawn us closer, and reminded us that we’re at our best when we face things together. And Together as a family is where we belong.

It’s just one more reminder of what makes Africa so incredibly unique — raw, powerful, and wild in so many ways But we can’t go anywhere without an engine… After months of travelling across Africa, we returned to Nandji 2 only to discover the engine had seized. Seawater had found its way in while we were away, and suddenly we were facing a refit we never expected. The generator and the old, crusty engine are now out and living in the cockpit, and the decision’s been made to repower the vessel. So now, it’s time to clean up this space, get it organised, and prepare Nandji for her new engine

Instead, I was met with our worst nightmare. Whilst we were away, the engine had back-filled with water and seized. Pumping out the oil, the true scale of the damage became clear, this engine was far worse off than I first thought. But before it could even be touched, another obstacle, the generator, stood in the way. Wth the generator now living in the cockpit, I can begin pulling the engine and preparing for what’s next

​I returned to South africa to get Nandji 2 ready to sail across the Atlantic ocean ONLY to discover that whilst away sea water had got into the engine and it is now seized. To take the positive out of the negative, it gives us the opportunity to complete the refit to the engine room. Remove the engines and clean the bilge from years of neglect. Once the bilge is workable, its time to strip the engine and learn how toast this engine really is.

One moment we’re stranded in the Namibian desert… A new motor and two thousand kilometres later, we are back in South Africa, only to be told we must fly home with in 7 days. Nandji is packed up, Landji is in storage, and suddenly we’re in Australia and straight into completing our first round of IVF. From the month injections and doctor visits we created One precious embryo… one fragile hope. To give that little chance everything we had, we slowed down.We stepped away from the noise, and tried to just be healthy and happy. Skatepark runs, workouts, beach hangs, and early-morning surfs to quiet the mind. But calm never lasts long in the lives of Nandji. One morning in the surf, tore my MCL clean off the bone. Eight weeks in a brace, another hurdle we never saw coming. But with time slipping away, we made a choice we never thought we would face: Bonita will stay in Australia to complete the embryo transfer, and I’ll return to South Africa and the boat alone to get her ready for the Atlantic Oceana and the miles ahead. We didn’t plan to walk this road apart… But sometimes, to keep the dream alive, we have to divide to conquer.

​Life is NOT EASY, how many more challenges can we have? www.sailingnandji.com We had dreamt for years about sailing to Africa, so when we finally arrived, we were determined to make the most of the opportunity and explore the African continent properly. We bought ourselves a Land Rover Defender and set off inland on our very own safari adventure. But what was meant to be a dream side-trip, quickly became the beginning of a chain of events that would test us more than we ever expected. Events that continually plague our journey It first begun with constant car troubles… and ended with a complete engine failure in the middle of the desert.One tow-truck ride, a weekend sleeping in a shed, and two long weeks waiting for a replacement engine later, we were finally back on the road driving 2,000 kilometres toward the life we know best: Sailing, and our floating home, Nandji 2. We have always sailed with our dog but Travelling with animals adds a layer of complexity, therefore our hound dog Marley has been living it up at a doggy resort while we’ve been away. We couldn’t wait to get back to him. But as we reached the border into South Africa, we were hit with another curveball. Even though we had been out of the country for months, immigration granted us only seven days and advised we must fly home. Suddenly everything changes again…

Six weeks ago, we rolled out of South Africa with one goal: to explore Southern Africa in our trusty Defender, Landji. But as it turns out… Landji had a completely different adventure in mind. Somewhere in the heart of the Namibian desert, casually bouncing along a lonely dirt road, everything changed. In an instant where Landji suffered catastrophic engine failure. A trip ending kind of problem By midnight, Landji was being winched onto the back of a tow truck, and we bounced along in the darkness back to a town while we tried to figure out what on earth just happened. Subsequently the weekend was spent sleeping in a shed, then two long weeks waiting in the desert, waiting for a new rebuilt engine to bring Landji back to life. And now—here we are. Stuck in the middle of nowhere. slightly delirious… and absolutely losing our minds.
