Sailing to Thailand!!! Let the 500 miles begin!
In this episode we are a family at sea on our way to Thailand! For the last few days we had been trying to make ground north through the West Sumatran islands towards the most north western tip of Indonesia to our clearance port Sabang. The weather has been terrible and with only a small window of nice weather before more expected bad weather comes, we have been persevering through some heavy seas, needing to turn around and hide away from weather, been boat bound in the mangroves with torrential rain and then finally sailed north from the island of Nias to Treasure island in the Banyak island group. With still a further 500 nautical miles to sail to reach our final destination of Thailand, the journey is just beginning!
With the weather still not settled, we continue to try and make ground...
In this episode, we continue on our journey north towards Thailand. After getting smoked by a massive squall the day before, we pick up anchor and head back out to sea. Once again the sky is dark and the wind is up. Being a little more tentative this time, we lean on the side of caution and try our best to dodge the bad weather....
In this episode, our time out in this remote atoll has come to an end. Without having any reception for over a week and running off of our 10 day old weather forecast, we have a hint of a feeling that the weather is about to change. We need to get 120 nautical miles north to a safe harbour before the wind changes and we are stuck. Leaving a beautiful place is always hard, but was it early enough... Upwind sailing is fun right?
In this episode, we are sailing north through thew West Sumatran Islands of Indonesia on our way to the Telos Islands. Sailing with an 11 month old baby onboard has its difficulties but it also comes with great rewards. We discover an amazing little island too good to pass up and have to stop to check it out. With a 3 day sailing passage, this is how we sail with a baby!
In this episode, with Nandji on the hardstand and not ready to be launched, we need to pack her up and move closer to the hospital. Bonita is now 9 months pregnant and the baby could come any day. With the hospital a 3 hour drive away, we move overland to the city of Penang. Due to Australia's tough and expensive restrictions and the fact it being near impossible to get a flight into the the country, we have had to think how and where we are going to have our baby. With great health care in the city of Penang, Malaysia, we decided this would be our place. Away from friends and family and alone in this new city, times can be difficult. Together we can face any obstacle and this is a new challenge for our family to overcome.
