SOMETIMES SAILING SUCKS... Ep 247

11/1/2021

In this episode, we are still over 100 nautical miles from land with a broken prop. We have spent 3 days now trying to sail back to the safety of land so we can complete the repairs to our Autoprop. With little wind, no way of motoring and a current against us, this task is becoming extremely challenging. However, calm weather are days filled with beautiful sunshine. It is easy to forget that we are having boat problems and we are trying to reach somewhere...

Our TOUGHEST decision yet, Where do we go???? ... Ep 246

Our prop fell apart 100 nautical miles from land. With little wind to sail, we are adrift in the shipping lane... How do we get out of this one?

In this episode, we are adrift in the Malacca Strait. Our prop fell apart over 100 nautical miles to land. We have 3 countries where we can go, but because of covid, these all have their complications. With little wind and no engine, we need to try and sail our way out of the shipping lane and back to port, where ever that may be...

Off to the Boat Yard we go. Ep 117

3/1/2019

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after months of sailing and pushing both ourselves and Nandji, we arrive to the island of Langkawi where we plan to complete extensive boat work. We first decided to come to Langkawi for the tax free imports to the island and the fact there was 4 different boatyards to choose from. This must mean lots of boats and lots of places to get things done. But don't assume these things as we discover. We shop around for a boatyard and finally after waiting a week, off to the boat yard we go and are hauled out and life on the hard stand stand begins.

We had been preparing ourselves for haul out day for so long and when the time finally came to head down to the boat yard, it was a mix of emotions. Stoked that we had made it so far and overcome many troublesome scenarios, excited to upgrade our beloved Nandji but then nervous for the next months of hard boat work.

We hope you enjoy the episode legends!

Our Boat is trying to KILL US! Ep 114

2/9/2019

For the past year we have been limping Nandji with a broken Engine, trying to get somewhere we can replace it. In this episode we depart Belitung, Indonesia and attempt to sail to Nongsa Point Marina where we can check out of Indonesia and head to Malaysia. As we are sailing closer to the equator we deal with heavy 40 knot squalls, strong opposing currents and little wind. A freak accident occurs which causes a fire and then we start taking on water which leaves us convinced that our boat is trying to kill us.

We hope you enjoy this difficult episode for us! It was one of our most challenging sails to date and all over the holiday time when we are meant to be having fun! (We still enjoyed it secretly)

Cruising = Boat work in Exotic Places. Ep 113

This week on Sailing Nandji, we arrive to the island of Belitung, Indonesia with a broken gearbox. After an exhausting passage, we get some rest and realise this island is not a bad place to be stuck! The scenery has been described to that similar of the British Virgin islands, not sure what they look like, but if they look like Belitung then they must be alright! We find the most helpful gentlemen named Harun who runs his own workshop in town. He went out of his way to assist us and get our gearbox fixed. If your ever in Belitung, look him up! Absolute legend! With Nandji ready to sail once more, we take the time to enjoy the island and go exploring, learning about the fascinating history. We hear about a miniature monkey and decide we need to see that!

We have had long and challenging sails since deciding to install a new engine in Langkawi, Malaysia. In the change of season we have dealt with some pretty hectic weather, everything wants to break and we still have a further 1000nm to go from Belitung to reach Langkawi! Lots more to share of this journey to our new engine!

We hope you enjoy this episode legends! Yew!

Who needs a Gearbox anyway... Ep 112

The wind disappears and drifting in the current we are heading towards the busy shipping lane... This engine will be the death of us!

This week on Sailing Nandji, we return to the islands of Karimunjawa to fix our headsail halyard and get some diesel so we are able to continue our journey towardsMalaysia. The further north we sail, the closer to the equator we go meaning light calm winds, smooth seas and massive squalls! We battle through relentless strong winds and rain to get the island of Belitung in sight. Needing to now traverse a busy skinny shipping lane through the dark night, we challenge ourselves with one hour shifts to concentrate on the compass as we upwind sail near reefs and islands. As the sun rises on our 6th day at sea, the wind disappears and we try to motor but nothing happens... Slowly in the 1 knot current we drift back towards the shipping lane... Who needs a Gearbox anyway... Ah, We Do!!

What an adventure we have been on to get this far towards our destination of Langkawi. Since deciding it was time we got a new engine, we were in Dili, Timor Leste at the time. Since then we have sailed over 1500nm to this point, spending over 20 days of the month of November at sea. December was something very similar! You could say we are determined or stubborn... Probably a bit of both to get this far! The adventure really begins when things go wrong. Living but that saying, we have been on one hell of an adventure! Hope you enjoy the vid! Yew!

Sailing with ALL the Elements Stacked against us! Ep 111

This week on Sailing Nandji, we continue our passage West towards Malaysia and our new engine. We had already been at sea for 6 days as we had a following sea and favourable wind to keep sailing across the Java Sea. The dream run could not last forever though as we are hit by a squall and it leaves us drifting with no wind in the hot sun. Finally reaching land fall after 9 days at sea, we rest up, run on the beach and then head back to sea battling terrible weather with squall after squall. Trying to sail with all the elements stacked against us, things break and make this next passage a real struggle and our hardest challenge to date! Determined to reach Malaysia and our new motor, we push on and battle our way across the Java Sea.

We hope you enjoy this episode! Our journey to our new engine was a long and hard one at times but a great a challenge! We are very happy to have achieved this goal! Looking forward to the next step and sharing the rest our journey up here with you! The challenges are not over yet!

White Water Rafting in a Sailboat! Ep 110

This week on Sailing Nandji, putting our exhaust troubles behind us and collecting our new crew, we head to sea on a day sail along the South coast of Lombok, continuing our journey west as we sail Indonesia towards Malaysia. A quick overnight stop off and nice weather we decide to tackle the notorious Lombok Strait. The currents that run between the Southern Islands of Indonesia are strong and unpredictable. We had been nervous about traversing this area for a long time, but with nice weather today was the day we would take it on! Everything was going fine as we found a strong current floating us north until on the horizon we could see white water and waves... White water rafting in a sailboat!

Thanks for watching legends, we hope you enjoy episode 110! YEW!

So I'm not overly cleaver when it comes to linking words together. I make up words and use slang more to confuse people in thinking that I know a great deal about nothing. See I just confused myself... But this blog is about our journey in living outside of the square that society expects us to follow. We like to run our own race, that way we always win.
