Surfing with the G.O.A.T. Kelly Slater!! A childhood dream come true! In this episode, we have been anchored up behind an island near Macaroni's resort in the Mentawai islands, enjoying our time in paradise as a monster swell hits the islands. Yosh was out for his morning surf and blabbering away to someone random, when he turned and right there in front of him was his childhood hero. Kelly Slater. Continuing our journey south through the archipelago, Kelly is not done yet and wants to see Nandji in all her glory so the captain of his vessel decides to try and run us down!!! We safely arrive into the last village and port of call before heading off to our atoll destination. Trying to find the last few supplies before the great adventure into the middle of no where! The town has limited food supplies, except Durian! The most disgusting and stinky fruit going around!!!

In this episode, we are deep in the Mentawai islands living out our dreams. Because of the state of the world these days, this area is so quite and removed from any outside tourism. The islands are scarce, the beaches are quite and the waves are pumping and empty. Places that used to have charter boats and surf camp guests are now non existent and Max and I are enjoying these waves all to ourselves. Then another sailboat arrives. More young crew and more fun to be had! When two sailboats are travelling in the same direction, you are not racing, but really you are!!!!
In this episode, we continue our exploration deep into the Southern Mentawai Islands. With our crew member Max from the Youtube channel Max & Occy onboard, the froth levels are high as we score one of the best waves in the area all to ourselves. Sailing to us is about the discovery of new places and we like to seek out as many of those as we can! Non stop sailing and surfing, then the need to hide away from weather regularly means we are on the move A LOT. After a couple weeks of living the dream., it is time to do some maintenance to bring Nandji back up to speed. Nothing like teachiing crew about sailing then scrubbing the decks!!
We welcome a new crew member onboard Nandji. A fellow youtuber from the channel Max and Occy, moves into the V-berth. We head south into the remote Mentawai islands in search for some seclusion and crowdless surf. An area that used to be hectic with boat charters paying big dollars, is now a hidden remote quite paradise, just like it was 30 years ago. We have some glorious sailing, followed by rough weather, but we scored some amazing waves!!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are still at the island of Simeulue off the west coast of Sumatra. this sleepy laid back island is as close to a free range farm as you can get! With limited protected anchorages along this coast line, we explore the island by land. We hire a scooter and dodge all the farm animals and their land mines, as we take the hog down some jungle tracks looking for waves. It is pretty easy to make a stranger smile. We have an old surfboard we wish to give away and we head down the beach in search of some grommets to pass it on to. It was actually harder to do then it sounds! But we perceiver and one lucky lad is the proud new owner of a surfboard!!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive to our Ultimate Anchorage, the Bay of Plenty in the Banyak islands. This is truly our paradise. Surfing from a sailboat is much harder than you think and finding a place that has an all weather anchorage, zero swell and roll in the anchorage, beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and then pumping waves a short tender ride away through mangroves, which is almost as much fun as the surf itself! We truly have found what we are looking for! I think once we left we have now decided that we will sail around the world just to come back here!!!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we pick up our new crew, Tash and Teebs, who are from back home in Australia. These couple of legends looked after Marley years ago when we first departed Australia bound for New Caledonia. Making them more Marley's friends than ours! Arriving to Nandji in the dark, we head out to sea on an overnight passage to the Mentawai Islands. A surfers dream land. These green horns were in for a ride as we motored out of the safety of Padang harbour under a full moon. An hour into the sail we are smoked by a heavy squall and for the rest of the night we upwind sail into the building choppy sea, strong winds and torrential rain. Welcome to the sailing life!! Arriving to the islands after a gruelling 20 hours at sea, we head straight to where the first surf charter boats we are see are anchored and get ourselves the first little warm up surf for the trip. For the following few days we hang in the area and surf Telescopes as the strong South East trade wind is relentless. We go diving and cook ourselves a massive feast in a beach fire. This is living!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, the boat yard is just a distant memory as we set sails down the West Coast of Sumatra in the search for waves. WE clear into Indonesia in Sabang and then head on down the coast, collecting a couple of young Aussie surfer lads as we go. We decide to take them along for a ride and head to the island of Nias. We had left Uncle and Bob back in Langkawi and arriving into the bay we were greeted with only these two vessels anchored in the calm lagoon. With a run of swell on the way, the lads get busy in the pumping left hander out the front. It was fun to try and remember how to surf again after months of not surfing! Worn out and hungry from a few days of practicing our surfing skills and combing the beach, we head into the weekly markets and show a little inside into village life. The sleepy quite town all week has barely noone around, but come market day it is a bustling metropolis! This is the first time we have seen Bat on the menu...
