What is like to spend 24 hours at Sea? this is the beginning of our passage sailing from Malaysia to Indonesia. Let the journey begin! We leave Malaysia after spending the last 18 months in the country. We were stuck, have worked crazy hard completing a second refit to our boat and then had a baby. Lock down after lockdown, Nandji is finally free and on the move again! We have a 700 nautical mile sail to reach our check in port of Padang, Indonesia. The first part of the journey involves crossing the bust shipping channel, the Malacca Strait. This is area is protected from the open ocean ground swell but it is close to the equator and large unexpected squalls can happen at anytime. Picking a gap in the monsoon winds, we begun the dash across to Indonesia. We were lucky to have the perfect weather forecast window for this passage. Nothing else to say, let's go! On to the next chapter of our lives!

We have just complete our first overnight passage with our daughter sailing 135 nautical miles in 24 hours and arrive back at the island of Langkawi, Malaysia. We never thought we would be returning to this island, but die to circumstances out of our control, here we are... Our first impressions on our return was how different the island is now, it's a ghost town. Shops are shut. Zero tourists. Immigration think we are illegal. The few remaining yachts have been forgotten about or abandoned and there are numerous sunken boats in the harbours. Masts sticking out of the water.... We are here for only a short time as we begin our passage across from Malaysia to Indonesia. Collecting our packages, collecting the essentials that a tax free island has to offer, we cast off the lines and begin the next chapter of sailing.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are on the move again! After a solid 6 long months of being around the island of Langkawi, we are free to mve inter province around Malaysia. We are in search of a better healthcare for our new baby and learnt that the city of Penang was the place to be. With a 70 nautical mile sail to reach the island city, we set off to sea once again, sailing towards that endless horizon. Langkawi has been a safe harbour for us during these crazy times but it is one amazing feeling to see it disappear in our wake. Onwards to the next chapter!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are living out the old saying which is so very true! There is always something to fix on a boat! Ever since we painted our topsides last year, Yosh is like an old man with his front lawn and when something happens to his paint... LOOK OUT! The nesting has officially begun and whilst Bonita is cleaning and cleansing the boat ready for the new baby, more problems are found. At least we can now travel inter province around Malaysia so we head to Harbour master and clear out of Langkawi. Our long 6 months on the island has come to an end and it is time to move on to greener pastures! Does the boat work ever end? there is always something to fix on a boat!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after spending a week in a popular anchorage amongst yachties during lockdown, we get on the move as one week in one place is way too long! We have been limited in the amount of activities we have been able to do and we are in need of other ways to let us have fun and keep us in shape. Wet season means waterfalls and Langkawi has a couple of giant waterfalls! Langkawi also has some very high peaks that disappear into the clouds and what better way to stretch our legs than to climb to the top of the second highest peak in Langkawi!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, With people on the move domestically around Malaysia and a big holiday celebration on the cards, we decide it best to do what we do best. Avoid humans! Departing our last anchorage of a hole in the wall, we squeeze Nandji through the cliffs and into the channel. We are planning to raise our Asymmetrical spinnaker Unicorn fart, but during the time of leaving the channel, a big squall had brewed and we were now about to cop some bad weather. Rather than continue into the storm and bash into the on coming weather, we make a quick decision to change our plan and hide away in what turns out to be one of the best places we have anchored in Langkawi. With so much stunning remote coast line to explore, we take Flubber on an excursion and finish with the best sunset we can remember. Sometimes plans change but if it is one thing we have learnt this year is to adapt and make the most out of any situation. As sailors, we are dependant upon the weather to travel and this means plans can change frequently. Adapting to live with this for ever changing scenario, the rewards received when accepting that things dont always go to plan are priceless. That is how we ended up here. Away from the crowds, alone and happy.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we head out for a sail to north coast of Langkawi to explore the intricate mangrove system that occupies majority of the coast line. With miles and miles of back waters to explore, we load up Flubber and do our best to get lost! Langkawi is only 6 degrees above the equator and is protected from the ocean swell. These two factors mean that sailing in the area is often light winds and smooth seas. It is a very relaxing and peaceful way to travel. We sail 20 nautical miles to reach this maze of creeks and anchor through a tight gap between two cliffs! What an amazing place!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, in this current crazy world we live in we feel you need to make the most of when an opportunity arises. We are not able to sail across oceans due to the covid restrictions, but we can still go sailing! We woke up to a great wind and blue skies, a rare occasion in Langkawi during the wet season. What better time then to go have some fun. Winds up! Sails up! Let's go sailing, Destination, NO WHERE! The swell free waters of Langkawi, Malaysia is great fun to play in with the wind up. We tack our way down the straight and are met with another vessel who lays down the challenge to Nandji. Time to test out our racing skills!
