We have just complete our first overnight passage with our daughter sailing 135 nautical miles in 24 hours and arrive back at the island of Langkawi, Malaysia. We never thought we would be returning to this island, but die to circumstances out of our control, here we are... Our first impressions on our return was how different the island is now, it's a ghost town. Shops are shut. Zero tourists. Immigration think we are illegal. The few remaining yachts have been forgotten about or abandoned and there are numerous sunken boats in the harbours. Masts sticking out of the water.... We are here for only a short time as we begin our passage across from Malaysia to Indonesia. Collecting our packages, collecting the essentials that a tax free island has to offer, we cast off the lines and begin the next chapter of sailing.

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after spending a week in a popular anchorage amongst yachties during lockdown, we get on the move as one week in one place is way too long! We have been limited in the amount of activities we have been able to do and we are in need of other ways to let us have fun and keep us in shape. Wet season means waterfalls and Langkawi has a couple of giant waterfalls! Langkawi also has some very high peaks that disappear into the clouds and what better way to stretch our legs than to climb to the top of the second highest peak in Langkawi!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, With people on the move domestically around Malaysia and a big holiday celebration on the cards, we decide it best to do what we do best. Avoid humans! Departing our last anchorage of a hole in the wall, we squeeze Nandji through the cliffs and into the channel. We are planning to raise our Asymmetrical spinnaker Unicorn fart, but during the time of leaving the channel, a big squall had brewed and we were now about to cop some bad weather. Rather than continue into the storm and bash into the on coming weather, we make a quick decision to change our plan and hide away in what turns out to be one of the best places we have anchored in Langkawi. With so much stunning remote coast line to explore, we take Flubber on an excursion and finish with the best sunset we can remember. Sometimes plans change but if it is one thing we have learnt this year is to adapt and make the most out of any situation. As sailors, we are dependant upon the weather to travel and this means plans can change frequently. Adapting to live with this for ever changing scenario, the rewards received when accepting that things dont always go to plan are priceless. That is how we ended up here. Away from the crowds, alone and happy.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we head out for a sail to north coast of Langkawi to explore the intricate mangrove system that occupies majority of the coast line. With miles and miles of back waters to explore, we load up Flubber and do our best to get lost! Langkawi is only 6 degrees above the equator and is protected from the ocean swell. These two factors mean that sailing in the area is often light winds and smooth seas. It is a very relaxing and peaceful way to travel. We sail 20 nautical miles to reach this maze of creeks and anchor through a tight gap between two cliffs! What an amazing place!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we maybe stuck, but we can still explore! Just because we are not able to continue sailing around the world, does not mean we cannot keep exploring where we are. Boat life to us, is more than just sailing. We enjoy being anchored away from everyone and everything and enjoying the nature around us. A major reason we love living on Nandji is to live closer to nature and immerse ourselves amongst the elements. It's the little things in life that are the most rewarding. A simple bow shower under the rain makes all the difference.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after a visit from the Malaysian customs, we decide it is time to head back to town to replenish our fresh supplies and learn more about the current world pandemic. After the ladies complete the food shopping, we learnt it was too early to be back around people. We head straight back to Nandji and set some sails and got as far away as we were allowed, time to spend another month off grid of lockdown living. Rather than return to Angry monkey beach, we find a new anchorage at the bottom of some cliffs. With no internet for two weeks, we move Nandji again closer to a beach where the Whippet can stretch his legs easily. With no other people around for weeks, the noises of the jungle really made it feel we were a long way from anyone or anything. A great place to hide away and let the world heal.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, the final task of boatyard boatwork gets done as we sand back and re antifoul the hull of Nandji. This is a filthy and tiring job but lucky for us we have spent many hours previously preparing the hull and sanding back and fixing areas meaning this time around, the task was kind of easy! Then after a few little dramas before lifting time, we manage to get everything in order and be put back in the water. Will everything work? I HOPE SO!!!! Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos and contributed to our new engine. It is all because of you legends we have been able to install this brand new engine and re-power Nandji. With all this boat work being complete our vessel is becoming indestructible as we get her ready for our next big trip across the Indian Ocean. The rewarding feeling of completing this boat work and returning to the water in 2 months is a feeling that will not be forgotten any time soon. The sheer relief of floating and the motor working is a feeling that will stay with us for a very long time. Nandji is unstoppable!!!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we say good bye to Uncle! The seasons are changing and he wants to get into Indonesia for the surf season before the weather turns bad. Such a legend and we are so very grateful that he has spent the last 2 months with us helping to upgrade Nandji. Before Uncle goes, he helps us to fibreglass in our cockpit floor again and re install the helm to make Nandji ready to sail once again. Our Sailboat Refit is nearly complete and this is the second to last job that needs to be completed before we can go back in the water. We have lived 9 long months without a fridge, yep NO FRIDGE! Our toilet has always been something that we are not happy with as it draws lots of power and is generally not a nice item to fix, therefore, we get a new one! We install the fridge and remove the old head to install the new shiny throne. Playing the game of thrones on a boat is something new.
