In this episode, making our second attempt at crossing the Malacca Strait to Indonesia, we are in a rush before the strong winds approach. Rounding the most western tip of Indonesia, we head south down the west coast of Sumatra and have some glorious days at sea. This passage is our biggest challenge yet as parents as we sail 1000 nautical miles as a family of 3.

Nandji is out at sea and sailing again! We had left the marina the previous day, as leaving is always the hardest part to any passage. We had anchored up for the evening and rose before the sun to begin the 130 nautical mile sail north, up the Malaysian coast to the island of Langkawi. It is hard to express the joy of being on the water again and to have Nandji on the move. This passage marked a milestone for our journey as it was our first overnight sail with our new daughter Tallula. What a perfect passage as we had smooth seas and got to sail most of the day with our Asymmetrical sail, Unicorn Fart!
After months of planning, set backs and lockdowns, the time has finally come. WE ARE OUT OF HERE!!! In this episode, we have been struggling with the officials in trying to get our dog Marley exported from Malaysia to our home country Australia. After months of failed attempts and continuos set backs, we have the green light for our pet t travel With Marley ready to leave, We are off! Bonita, Get the boat ready! Our 3000nm journey from Malaysia to Australia, will take us through Indonesia on our return route. First though, we have to leave the marina. After so many hardships and a year spent in preparing to leave, motoring out of the marina was an emotional experience. Reaching the first anchorage only a few miles away felt like a massive achievement. We are off and let the adventure begin!!
A shake down sail wouldn't be complete unless things broke!! That's why we have them I guess... In this episode, we are out sailing and going through Nandji's systems to make sure everything works. We have been living at anchor for a few days, learning what life is like living on Nandji once again. We need to head back into the marina to continue our preparations for leaving and finalise Marley's departure to New Zealand, with a little breeze, we head back towards the marina. We are on a shakedown, so as the wind was blowing, the sails go up.... Then they all fall down.... We need to head back in to the marina for repairs instead!!
With a strict lockdown looming, we need to get out! Let's go sailing! In this episode, we narrowly escape the regulations and head out for a shakedown sail before strict lockdown rules are implied to the country. We want to get out of the confinements of the marina and be at anchor where life is more normal. With strict regulations coming into play at mid night, we take the opportunity to head out for further sea trials of Nandji in preparation for leaving Malaysia soon. We want to test out all the systems on Nandji and make sure she is ready for the long journey ahead, sailing back to Australia.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after exploring the beautiful city of Penang and checking out hospitals and doctors for the new spud, we figured we wanted to prepare Nandji for the next adventure. With limited boat yards in Malaysia, we have to explore all our options, including the local fishing vessel yard... With a green light to haul out in the coming days, we leave the city and the fancy marina and head to sea. Penang is connected to the mainland by 2 very long bridges and Nandji has only passed under a few bridges so the novelty of this was amusing. Clear of the bridges and back into the Malacca straits, we up wind sail through the day and night to get south to the boatyard. Bonita continually grows rounder and due to covid restrictions tightening around the country, this could be the last sail as a duo. Baby is coming and the nesting begins!!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we head out for a sail to north coast of Langkawi to explore the intricate mangrove system that occupies majority of the coast line. With miles and miles of back waters to explore, we load up Flubber and do our best to get lost! Langkawi is only 6 degrees above the equator and is protected from the ocean swell. These two factors mean that sailing in the area is often light winds and smooth seas. It is a very relaxing and peaceful way to travel. We sail 20 nautical miles to reach this maze of creeks and anchor through a tight gap between two cliffs! What an amazing place!
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, in this current crazy world we live in we feel you need to make the most of when an opportunity arises. We are not able to sail across oceans due to the covid restrictions, but we can still go sailing! We woke up to a great wind and blue skies, a rare occasion in Langkawi during the wet season. What better time then to go have some fun. Winds up! Sails up! Let's go sailing, Destination, NO WHERE! The swell free waters of Langkawi, Malaysia is great fun to play in with the wind up. We tack our way down the straight and are met with another vessel who lays down the challenge to Nandji. Time to test out our racing skills!
